After the ordeal we had with the almost forest fire in Utah we decided to make a break for Colorado. I hadn't been there since I was young and all I remember is being awestruck by the mountainous landscapes. Seeing as things tend to look much more impressive the younger you are I was not entirely sure what to expect, but I'd have to say that I was not disappointed at all.
Our first stop was at the beginning of Colorado. The sign welcoming you to "Colorful Colorado" was written in a two tone brown and white - kind of ironic. Next, was a stop to wash up. There was this pretty little creek with a bridge right over it - a convenient little washing hole.
Then it was on to Telluride! They were having a Wild West Fest, which was probably pretty cool, but working in Fort Worth, TX for the past 4 months, and seeing no end of old west culture, we ended up passing on exploring that further.
So then it was off to Alpine lakes, which was extremely cool. We camped at 11,000 feet! And I'll be damned cause I left my good sleeping bag at home. Figuring on summer weather isn't always the best thing when your up in altitude like that.
We did a lot of climbing/hiking over loose rocks because quite a bit of the mountainous areas with good vistas had this slate type loose rock all over the place. And finally we took a bumpy drive through Ophirs Pass that might have been the highlight of the trip. It was absolutely beautiful and the view rivaled that of just about any other place I have been to. I highly recommend it to anyone venturing to Colorado with a 4-wheel drive vehicle. All in all, it was the coolest 4 day excursion you could imagine.
